Today will go down in history…

The day of my wedding…the day I married your daddy…was the happiest day of my life. Literally. I couldn’t even imagine being happier than I was that day. See for yourself. Look how happy mommy and daddy are:

Okay, now take that feeling of happiness, that utter elation, that moment of pure bliss and multiply it by 768 trillion. That is about 1/17,377 of the amount of joy that I felt today…that I still feel.

Baby, we saw you today. We connected with you today. Today you are 110% real.

Of course I’m talking about the NT ultrasound (read about it here).  Our appointment was for 7:30 this morning and at approximately 4:34am I couldn’t sleep anymore. I just laid in bed watching the minutes tick by until I could get up and start getting ready for the appointment. I was nervous, excited, scared and nervous. <–Did I say that already? Daddy and I got to our appointment and we were clenching hands. I mean clenching. Today was a big day for you, for us. Today was also my first ultrasound that was abdominal…progress! You’re big enough now that we can “see” you through my tummy now. How cool is that?

The ultrasound technician escorted us into our room and instructed me to lay down on the exam table and for daddy to take a seat. In about 30 seconds flat you were up on the screen! Oh hi monkey! We saw your heart flickering immediately and as she started the exam I casually mentioned that I had my graduate degree in neuroscience and was very interested in learning and seeing all I could see today. I’m so glad I did that. Our tech was awesome! She pointed out all your bits and pieces to us and oohed and ahhhed with us when we said you were the cutest baby we’d ever seen…she agreed. She saw it too. You’re very special, baby! 😀

You were quite tired and napping (it was still early…I don’t blame you haha). You started out face down in your sac snoozing away. She began to take measurements all over and realized that she needed to wake you up to get a better view. So she dipped mommy so my feet were above my head and started jiggling my tummy with the transducer. Well, that certainly got your attention! You flailed your arms and kicked your legs and did a complete 180 degree turn so that your face was now up! It was literally the.cutest.thing.ever!!! Your daddy and I almost died…right there…on the spot. That made it SO real.

When she got to the placement of the placenta (I had been curious to know if it was on the left or the right so I could guess gender according to Ramzi’s theory) she found that it was smack dab in the middle, sitting anterior in my uterus. So much for guessing if you’re a boy or a girl! But no wonder it’s been so hard to find your heartbeat!!! The placenta is in the way!! Ahhh, all makes sense now. Don’t you love anatomy??

The tech checked your heartbeat while you were asleep — a healthy 142 and measured the nuchal translucency — 1.4mm. WOOHOO!!! You are well within the normal range. You are such a rockstar! She also did a crown to rump length on you and you are measuring right on target at 12 weeks and 5 days! 62.8mm long or 2.47 inches long. So without further ado, here you are in all your glory today:

First, how you started the morning…fast asleep with your face adjacent to the wall of your gestational sac:

Here we have a close-up of the most adorable profile in the history of faces. For some reason I knew you’d look like your aunt…and sure enough, you have her lips! She has awesome lips (same as your grandpa’s) so feel blessed:

And this was right after she woke you up and you did your little flip! Now your face is up and you were so cranky that we woke you that you were kicking your legs up and your tushy was up in the air. Seriously the cutest thing:

Now time for a few stats. With the blood results and my age, in conjunction with the ultrasound, here are our “risk” numbers:

Down’s Syndrome: 1 in 12,000 – screen negative

Trisomy 18: 1 in 100,000 – screen negative

So, baby, everything looks fantastic with you and it’s time to tell the whole family about your impending arrival! We made it!!! Thank you for hanging in there with me, my love. I really want to do everything right by you and so far it’s worked. I’d high five you if you weren’t probably napping! 😉

I love you baby monkey!!!
